Every sapling accounted for, until it becomes a tree.

Poshane is the survival-assurance platform for afforestation. It runs new programmes from planning to the year-five census, and it counts plantations already in the ground tree by tree. Boundaries are walked, sites are tagged, and anyone can check the record.

ಪೋಷಣೆ means nurture in Kannada: the care that has to follow planting, season after season, until a sapling can stand on its own.

An illustrative site: the boundary walked on GPS, saplings planted at ten-metre spacing inside it, and a tagged site board at one corner.Site boardLocationIDScan to see thissite's public record50 m
Illustrative site. Boundary walked at 15 GPS points. Area calculated from the walk: 1.84 ha, perimeter 498 m. 187 saplings at 10 m spacing.

Planting takes a day. Survival takes five years.

Most programmes count saplings on planting day. Then the maintenance contract runs out, the photographs stop coming, and nobody can say how many are still alive, or where.

Land gets planted twice. Species are swapped at the nursery gate. Survival figures are typed in by the people paid to achieve them.

Poshane is built around the question that gets asked later: which sites survived, and who is answerable for the ones that didn't?

New planting: from land offer to living tree

One record per site, keyed by its Location ID, carried through five stages. Each stage has a gate that the next one depends on.

  1. Land is offered

    Government departments and private landowners

Departments offer land through a form or a bulk spreadsheet upload, checked row by row against the officer's own jurisdiction. Private landowners offer land with their RTC uploaded. Every offer receives a reference.

An offer is not a site. It gets no Location ID until someone has walked it.
  2. Walked and verified

Verification cadre, two officers per taluk

An officer walks the boundary with a handset. Area and perimeter are calculated from the GPS track, never typed in. The declared land is compared with what was found, checked against Bhoomi land records and tested for overlap with every existing site on the State's GIS layers. Only then is a Location ID issued and a tag printed.

No land record. No custodian. No planting approval.
  3. Planned and raised

Scientific advisors and the Forest Department

Each site gets its own species plan, set by its agro-climatic zone, land category and measured area. Scientific advisors approve or return it. Approved plans add up to a nursery raising requirement by district, species and bag size, worked back from the planting season.

Nothing is sown for a site until its plan has been approved.
  4. Dispatched and planted

    Nurseries and implementing agencies

Every nursery batch is checked against the approved plan for its site. The agency records what it planted against what it received, species by species, and binds the tag to the site.

A species outside the plan is flagged on the record for everyone to see. Nothing is swapped quietly.
  5. Maintained, counted and audited

Implementing agency, co-signed by an independent audit officer

Between visits the agency reports against the site's maintenance schedule: watering, weeding, manuring, protection and casualty replacement. At each census it counts survivors against what was planted, and an audit officer co-signs. Survival is calculated from the two counts. A site below threshold opens a rectification with a named owner and a deadline, and anything left unanswered moves up to the district, then the state.

The officer who walked a boundary can never audit that site.

Already planted: start with a count of every tree

Many plantations have a planting-day figure and nothing since. Poshane goes back to the ground and records every plant that survived, so the plantation finally has a baseline it can be held to.

  1. Register the site

The boundary is walked and the site gets a Location ID and a tag, exactly as a new site would.

  2. Enumerate every surviving plant

Each plant is geo-tagged where it stands and photographed, with its species, girth at breast height, height and current health recorded.

  3. Publish the baseline

Survivors by species, size classes, health and gaps where plants have died, all traceable to individual records.

  4. Bring it under care

From the baseline on, the site follows the same maintenance, census and audit as any new planting.

Everything Karnataka's programme asked for, in one register

KSLSA set out what a state programme has to answer for. Poshane covers all of it, on the same Location ID, through the same gates.

Afforestation on public land

Block, bund, roadside, canal, urban and institutional plantings, each measured the right way: as an area walked or a line traced.

Private land offerings

Farmers and owners offer their own land with the RTC uploaded. It is verified against Bhoomi and FRUITS before the offer is accepted, then walked like any other site.

Lake rejuvenation

The walking officer records the lake's parameters. Foreshores and bunds get a Location ID and are planted per kilometre.

Soil and moisture conservation

Trenches, pits, bunds and check structures are recorded against the site they serve, so water work and planting can be read together.

Biotic and anthropogenic pressure

Grazing, fire, encroachment and cutting are logged as threats on the site, with the protection that answers each one and who owns it.

Carbon capture

The landowner and carbon rights holder are recorded at verification. Census data then supports sequestration estimates, authentication and audit, without ever holding up the planting.

Connected to the State's own records

Poshane doesn't ask anyone to take a site on trust. It checks each one against the systems the State already relies on.

Satellite and GIS

Every walked boundary sits on satellite imagery and the State's GIS layers. Overlaps are caught before approval, and canopy is followed from space as the years pass.

Bhoomi

Survey numbers and RTCs are checked against Karnataka's land records, so a site has a land record and a custodian before anything is planted.

FRUITS

Private landowners are matched to the State's farmer registry, which links their participation to the schemes and benefits they are already enrolled in.

One register. A way in for everyone who answers to it.

Every app reads the same programme register. Each person sees their own scope in full, and nothing beyond it.

  • Your own branding and dashboards
  • Cross-project oversight
  • Programme management support

Rules the record keeps, so nobody has to take anyone's word for it

Area is measured, never typed

Every site's area and length come from the track walked on the ground.

No one checks their own work

Verification and audit are separate cadres, and the system refuses an officer who tries to audit a site they walked.

Both numbers are kept

Where an agency and an auditor count the same ground, both counts stay on the record. Shortfalls keep their reasons.

Photographs carry their own proof

Each image holds its capture time from the satellite clock, its position and the officer who took it. It is written once and never replaced.

Money never passes through

Funds flow directly between funders, programme owners and agencies. Poshane records the work, not the payments.

Data stays in India

The register is hosted in India, the programme owner owns its data, and a full export is available if the arrangement ever ends.

Five crore saplings across Karnataka

Poshane is the platform for the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority's Five Crore Sapling Plantation and Lake Rejuvenation Programme, a five-year effort reaching every district and taluk of the state.
